It's A Wrap-November That Is

I know there is definitely a reason why I do a recap of what I accomplish in a month.  Because there are definitely times I think that I have not done anything and I surprise myself when I look back.

My goals for the month.

1.  Farmer's Wife I only have 8 more blocks to go.  I think I will need a day to square up each and every one of them, and take pictures so I make sure that I have them all.  Then decide if there may be some I want to redo.

I finished all 111 blocks even though for some reason I can only find pictures for 108.  As I am squaring them up I am taking a better picture.  I also chose the corner stones and lattice fabric but I still need to choose something for the row ends because the quilt will be set on point. 


2.  Aurifil Block of the month.  I kind of liked this block called tossed salad. 

 

3  Lattice quilt-basket weave quilt the top is all finished.  I even have the fabric for the backing. 

4.  Drunkard's path I have a bunch of the sub squares made into rows.  I need to put those rows together to make some blocks.  I have about 8 blocks made and more fabric cut to construct more blocks. 

5.  Blocks from the BOM for the Batik group I belong to.  I am behind 4 blocks.  I am now behind 7 or 8 blocks.  See not quite a BOM.  One of my challenges was that I had ran out of my focus fabric.

 I actually found some online and ordered a few more yards.

6.  I have lots of quilting to do.  I like to quilt, but I like to piece, and I like to sew and I definitely need more hours in my day!
I finished quilting the Lazy Sunday!

 Still working on the charity quilt.

 I worked on some Christmas presents.

Magic Pillowcase

Chap stick Holders.  I got this idea from Dawn at Sew You Quilt 2.

I even managed to make a small tea towel for a present with this super cute redwork tree.

I printed out the pattern on Transfer Eze and stitched away.  I haven't rinsed the transfer Eze off yet. 

I also pulled out a UFO and started working on it.  With a lot of help from the fabulous Nancy the Pug Mom I have a better idea of how it works and have actually finished a bunch of blocks. 

I also started working on the Bonnie Hunter Grand Illusion Mystery Quilt. I dug through my scrap boxes and pulled out some black, yellow, pink and aqua/turquoise colors. 

I read/listened to 4 books this month too. 

Not to shabby of a month if I say so myself. 

Coulda, Shoulda, Wanna, Oughtta, Woulda

Thanksgiving was lovely.  I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with the kids, and having the majority of the cooking done instead of being the one to do it.  The little boys decided they were going to dress for dinner, so they had suit pants, vests, shirts and ties on.  I keep marveling at how quickly they grow.

I do not shop on Black Friday, because frankly I do not see the value spiritually or monetarily to being out with the crowds to purchase "stuff".  What I wanted to do was work on my Christmas gifts I am making, and start Bonnie Hunter's Grand Illusion Mystery Quilt.  The first set of instructions is published the day after Thanksgiving. 

My challenge was that DH was home and he seemed intent on drawing up plans for the kitchen remodel we have been talking about,  and comparing and shopping for appliances the majority of the day.  Nope no appliances purchased but we came to some agreements regarding a tentative layout.

Saturday (today) DH had to work so I had the whole day to myself to do what I wanted to do.  I worked on some binding.  I have been working on the binding for 3 days now and only have part of one side done! I am just a few inches from turning my first corner.  That is just kind of sad you know. Especially since this is only a twin size quilt. 

I ought to have been working on the quilting for the guild charity quilts I have.

I would have done some FMQ practice, but the sun room is too cold, and my heater that DH thought was "the best" and had traded someone for,  had a malfunction.  I am thinking if it melts the plug between the prongs that it probably shouldn't be used.

I do have the quilt and machine all set up to play though on a practice piece which is about the size of a baby quilt.

I could have started working on more Christmas gifts- I found some simple Christmas tree patterns on Craftsy and am just going to do some Red Work Embroidery on some dishtowels that I purchased. But as you can see I didn't really do a lot with those. 

I did make a magic pillowcase using a tutorial I found on YouTube.  It will be a gift for one of the grandsons.

Love the pattern and the tutorial and think I need to make a few more!
Made a wee bit of headway for the Yellow Brick Road.

 And actually cut out some parts for the Grand Illusion Mystery Quilt.  I found these scraps while digging through the scrap boxes.

I have 12 HST triangles completed and squared up.  Just 268 more to go.  I have about 15 yellow 2 1/2 inch squares cut I have 85 more to go and don't even get me started about the black squares.  :D

What I did do was waste a huge chunk of my day on Instagram reviewing the steps to Lori Holt's Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas QAL and writing them out.

Isn't this just cuteness overload?  Some of the blocks are from Lori's book Quilty Fun, but others the instructions are on Instagram only. 

I think I would get much more done if I stayed off the computer and instagram.  There is always tomorrow!

Excitement of the Holidays

I woke up this morning, said a prayer, grabbed a cup of coffee and sat down to read a couple of blogs before I head out the door to work.   All I could think of is.... I only have to make it 3 days this week!  Then I have a 4 day weekend to kind of,  do what I want.  Sorry if I sound like I have a bad attitude about my job, it isn't that, even after last week.  (Don't even get me started on a rant about people and being sick.  Nuff said!)

What I am excited about is that someone is making dinner for us, and it will be fun and relaxing, even though we will help since this is their first real foray into making a holiday dinner.  But it is also the beginning of Bonnie Hunter's Grand Illusion Mystery.

Now Bonnie says she attributes the ideas and colors to her visit to Mackinaw Island, in Michigan and their Grand Hotel.  With Bonnie being such a rockin babe I am going to attribute it to the group Styx and their song Grand Illusion which was really popular when some of us were teens and  young adults.

Forget the late Thanksgiving night shopping for Christmas sales, and Black Friday bargains.  I am excited about starting Bonnie's new mystery!  23,000 Facebook fans can't be wrong?  Can they? 

What Have You Done Today?

The weekend was very busy.  I do know that because of my crazy schedule I am awake by 5:00 am.  But it was all a blur.

Saturday I fed the girls, gave them some treats.  Took my life in my hands with the ice on the ground.  Squared up the quilt I finished the day before, buried my threads, took out some quilting in a small section and I will quilt that section over. 

I made binding for that quilt.

Two more chap stick holders.  I still have a few more to make.

I have quite the pile of yellow brick road blocks going, but looking at my strips, I am thinking I do not have enough to make a queen size quilt.  I cannot remember what size I started to make originally.

So I started looking through my scraps for more pieces that I could add to it.  While I did not use fat quarters I think it will work, but also purchased some fabrics to help it along.

That is the danger of having such an old UFO sometimes there are no clues left, and if you can remember what you were thinking 16 years ago then more power to you, but I cannot even remember what I did that day.   I decided that from now on I am going to start keeping a written journal of what I am working on. 

I cooked a pot of beans and corn bread for dinner. The beans even came out right.  DH and I did something we rarely do, we watched a movie Twelve Years a Slave.

Sunday we had temps in the mid 40's which is lovely.  Again I am up at 5:00 am.   The municipality that DH works for do leaf collections.  The residents rake the leaves out to the street curb, and the workers rake the leaves to the street, and suck them up into a truck which kind of mulches them up.  The snow and ice has messed up their schedule too, so they are desperately trying to get them up off the streets before they have more snow and ice. 

 I took an old tape measure apart.  I keep seeing the snap bags and decided I have to make some, and DH just happened to have a tape measure available.

I fed the girls no danger today except that I get mobbed when I walk in.  I think they are digging a tiger pit in their pen so they can capture prey.  Hopefully I am not the prey. 

Ran to the grocery store, Joann's for some supplies to make Christmas gifts, the bread store, the bank, to the MIL's to deliver eggs.  I left the house at 8:30 am and I did not get home until close to 3 pm.  I started a pot of chili, unloaded and put away part of the groceries, did dishes and DH was home.   Not much sewing getting accomplished. 

My mother called and asked what I did all weekend.  I could not tell her much because I just couldn't remember and it seemed like I accomplished so little.  Isn't it strange when you do a ton of things but can't remember anything you did? 

Shiver Me Timbers

Saturday morning and I thought I was going to go do some retail therapy.

Not my normal fabric store, but I needed some cheap muslin, and cheap batting?  No I was not going to make a quilt for someone I was going to practice my FMQ because for the first time in 8 months this is empty!  I wanted to practice the motif I was going to use on my next quilt and play with a really cool ruler I found. 

Can you believe it?  I have been struggling with a quilt, and sewing machines for months!  This is the 3rd sewing machine we finally put on it, the Singer 15-91 and it works wonderful.

Lessons learned?
Love my quilter that DH made me.  I have given him suggestions for upgrades.  ;)
After changing machines multiple times I finally found the one, but once I get so far in the quilt I only have about 3 inches to quilt at a time. 

I squared it up as best I could and tried to make sure that I did not cut off any of the points on the borders.  I have a lot of thread ends to bury, and I need to figure out where I had some stitching problems and mark it so I can rip out the quilting and redo that area.  I think some safety pins will help.  I am just thrilled that it is quilted at least.  I will get my binding ready too!

My plans have been thwarted by mother nature though.

We had an ice storm this morning.  The airport is also closed, a plane slid off the runway.  DH is at work, it is their holiday parade, fun run, and 5 K today for the municipality he works.  They are saying that the weather is going to warm up.  We will see.  But for now?  I have a yellow brick road to work on. 

I Am Just Not Ready

Oh the weather outside if frightful.....come on you know the song.  All I can think is that it is much too soon for the white stuff which is covering the ground.  But perfect weather for getting some sewing done.

I finished up my basket case quilt top (pattern by Cluck, Cluck, Sew).  I am kind of liking the colors. DH says he likes the bright!  I tried to match the colors based upon the card included in the Bali Pop but somehow when I ordered the border fabric I ended up with one that was more of a poll color with peachy pinks in it.  I thought I was going to hate it, but I think it kind of helps. 

I did a bit of quilting, still not finished yet.  UGH!  A little at a time will get it done right? 

I did get inspired to start to make some Christmas gifts.  Thanks to the Twas the Night Before Christmas Blog hop at Sew We Quilt, and Dawn at Sew You Quilt 2. 

I made a chap-stick holder. 

I think that it may need to be a wee bit smaller.  I thought it turned out pretty cute though and it would be a nice little stocking stuffer.  I have a few more to make.  I have been digging through my scraps, and my room looks like it!  DH says that is just not his colors. 

I also received some fabric stash enhancements.

 Red grunge which is for the grandson's quilt I am planning, some text fabric one is kind of a golden yellow, the other is white on white, also a black on white print with those fun safety pins for some stash enhancements.

 Some toweling to make a Christmas gift.  Or two or four. 

These awesome chalkboard Christmas prints from Fat Quarter shop.  I just loved the line and had to have it. 

I am kind of surprised at how much I have been getting accomplished.  We will see how I do Tuesday.
