50 Shades of Gray

First of all get your mind out of the gutter.  I am not referencing the book.  I have been trying to find a gray to go with my fabrics for my ocean waves quilt.  I have bought so many different colors of gray.

Nothing is quite right.
OK maybe it isn't 50 but there are 6.

The other day I was working on Jeff's t-shirt quilt and this happened when I was putting fusible web on the back.

I put another layer on the block, but look what it did to my iron.
I cleaned it off, but the temperature just didn't seem right.  I didn't want to keep fighting it so I decided maybe it was time to get a new one.  My old Roweta is over 10 years old, and it doesn't leak, but the cord won't reel in anymore.  I cleaned it the best I could but I was struggling to get it to work right. Maybe it was time to get a new one.

Yep I splurged and bought an Oliso.  I finally tried it today.  It is going to get some getting used to though.

I found some more fabric for Jeff's quilt.
I love text fabrics and I bought the two light ones from a line called Literary.  But the greens!  Oh my!

Tractors, and rows of crops.

Eggs.  To honor Jeff's love of his chickens.

The aunt is home in the care of hospice.  It is only a matter of days, lots of work, but I have some free time but can't really concentrate much so I am working on mindless sewing.  So I drug out my tumblers and started sewing them together.

Also gave me a chance to try out my new iron.

I had been saving some money to buy myself a gift.  I found a great sale.

I will show more later.  Any ideas about gray?  I have a couple Bella solids, Essex Linen, Kona, Centennial, and AMB.

  4. Funny how hard it can be sometimes to find just the right shade. I just had to dispose of my 25 year old Rowenta iron. Luckily I had another, put the one that died was a better model. I'll probably be looking at irons soon, just to see what's new.

  5. The interfacing I use has to be covered with a protective layer of cloth before ironing or it looks just like that. Ugh! A new iron is fun, though! I don't like it when I'm looking for a perfect shade of fabric and can't find one...good luck! Hugs to you as you care for the aunt. xo

  7. I am so sorry to read about your aunt. I was hoping she had turned the corner. You have had so many rough months. Sending more prayers.

Yes, the Olisos do take getting used to and then it is hard to go back. lol

I always layer parchment paper between the iron and the fusibles. They are brutal on the irons. Love the new greens!

Is that a HQ longarm? Fun! You will love it! Avante?

  8. We used Kona 'Ash' for exchange blocks. I don't like gray, but, it's a nice, silvery color, and looked good with all the bright colors we used. Hope the end is easier for AA. Never easy, no matter what. Hope you are ok, too. You've had a really tough few months, with the AA's and Jeff. Know that I'm still praying for you.

  9. Those Olisos irons look pretty amazing. They are the ones that lift up when you put them done aren't they? Amazing how many grays there are! Love the fun fabrics for Jeff's quilt.
