5th Annual Piggy Bank Challenge Begins!

I decided I needed to participate in Val's 5th Annual Piggy Bank Challenge from Val's Quilting Studio again this year.

I had played along a couple of years ago, but discovered that I had someone sabotaging my savings.  Jeff was grabbing my saved cash to buy coffee every morning....we had a come to Jesus talk about him snatching my savings.  I made sure he had enough money in his pocket to buy coffee for the week, and any change was contributed to my jar. Amazingly he decided that he wasn't thrilled with the coffee from a particular company any more and quit buying coffee except on the rare occasion.

I didn't sign up the past year, but I still used my jar.  Recently my jar was running over.  After Jeff died, I discovered several Solo cups throughout the house full of change, as well as the side pocket in my car, the side pocket in the truck.  Jeff's tool box in the barn, Jeff's tool box at work, Jeff's locker at work, and my dad pulled out a ton of change from Jeff's car which was wrecked.  There was so much change I finally broke down and bought a coin sorter.

I ended up with over $210 dollars in change.

Since I pay for lots of things with cash I knew I need to participate this year.  Unfortunately I don't have my change thief around anymore, but at least the change will not end up all over the house, cars, basement, barn.

This is my 1/2 gallon jar, and what I have accumulated since the first of July.  I definitely need to clean out my wallet again soon.  I wanted to get a 1 gallon jar, but the local store that usually carries them didn't have one.  So I will have to stick with my 1/2 gallon jar for now.

  1. Rich and I have been doing this for years. we use one of those popcorn tins and just throw in our change. every now and then we roll it up to see where we are at. we have gone out to eat, bought things we wanted for the house etc with the money. it is usually over 100 so it is a nice little splurge. Now Rich takes the quarters and uses them LOL sometimes it is a scratch ticket purchase. thats ok because small winnings can go back in the can ha ha

  2. We have a small change dish and I have been taking it to the bank and putting it in the college savings account, surprising how it accumulates!

  4. It's amazing how all that change can add up. We have a big plastic Coke bottle that we throw all our change in. We've done this since we were first married. Our first container broke a few years ago so we bought another one just like it. I need a vacation so we may have to cash it out!

  9. I have an old peanut can that I painted years ago. I put my change in there every night before bed. It grows pretty fast. When the can is full I take it to the bank. They have a coin counting machine, so no need for wrapping. We have used the money for various things, suppers out, a show and live preforming acts.

  10. Change adds up so fast. What I've found since doing this challenge is that I really concentrate my change in one spot which is very helpful, since I was like you before, with change everywhere. Good luck.

  11. Colette it's amazing how it adds up. There is a life lesson in here somewhere... maybe don't discount the little things because they are what make up the big things. You wrote a great post.
