11. November 11- I am thankful I was given a tenacious character. While there is a gas furnace in my big old house, we used an outside wood boiler to help cut the costs. Last year just a few days before Jeff died, he came in and told me that the boiler was not working, it had a leak. When I finally got out of my procrastination funk I pulled the back off the boiler and discovered a pipe broken at a fitting. Last week I hired a plumber to come and replace the fitting--he was so impressed with my drive, he insisted that he make sure it was not leaking anywhere else and filled it for me too.
The boiler is not a name brand, I think if I remember right Jeff purchased it a couple of years before he met me, from a man over near Kalamazoo. I cannot find any paperwork on how this works. I tried Youtube but it was not very helpful either, but...... Today was the day. The temperature was a balmy 40 degrees, and it had been very windy all night long. So I headed to the woodshed. I started a fire in the firebox of the boiler. I then flipped the switch for the blower, and went off to do other things so the water could come up to temperature. Once it came up to temp, I flipped the switch for the pump, and heard it working. I did some other outdoor tasks, and finally wandered into the house, down to the basement, and discovered the heat exchanger was working. I texted my brother who does HVAC to make sure I put a new furnace filter in correctly, and life was perfect. I will say that I can tell the difference because the hot water running through the boiler into the heat exchanger, and furnace helps keep the duct work constantly warm, so I don't get those cold blasts when the furnace comes on. Also it isn't coming on as often. So Thank you to my family, and God for the tenacious spirit, the spirit of a fighter that was given to me.
I am going to cheat and use a video of how the boiler works. Which reminds me it is time to go check mine.

ReplyDeleteso glad it's working
ReplyDeletePretty cool. Well done you!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have a clue how to use something like that. We have a gas heater, but, use electric to blow the air around.
